Just for the kicks:

After further revision, I found that indeed, mldonkey was still downloading.  
What? I dont know, but the file was already 110% as big as it should.  I moved 
it to another dir, deleted the mldonkey download and fired the originat 
Bittorrent downloader.  It verified the file, cleaned out the excess parts, 
downloaded 5 MB, and voila, at last it was over.
