I think we should follow the GNU/GCC recommentation rather than
the mingw-w64 recommentation, because the former have knowledge
about a broader spectrum of system (at least I hope so). And your
"gcc [1]" reference clearly states:

| This library should be used with the target triple x86_64-pc-mingw32.

So let's stick with:

    32-bit:    i686-pc-mingw32
    64-bit:  x86_64-pc-mingw32
