        I added:

         <code> this is 'code'd text </code>

to my HTML test page, expecting it to do nothing.  Instead it came out
colored cyan.  Then I checked lynx.lss and found:

        code:normal:cyan

So, if you have an entry in lynx.lss for 'code' such as:

        code:black:black

text inside code tags will be invisible.
