amid all the speechifying, there is a perfectly good question:
what should Lynx do if it encounters some other tag within <PRE>...</PRE> ?
currently, it says: "Oops! you forgot the </PRE> !" & creates </PRE> ,
but since omission of </PRE> is a really bad anti-HTML crime
-- since <PRE> blocks are supposed to override all other formatting -- ,
shouldn't Lynx say instead: "Oh dear! the author forgot he's inside <PRE> ,
so i'd better ignore that tag on the assumption there's a </PRE> coming";
further refinement might lead to ignoring some tags,
while treating others -- eg <A> -- as indeed implying </PRE> :
that could be discussed, but there's a genuine point of debate here,
which is currently being ignored.

how about: "Lynx holds the World speed record & always handles safely,
but its ride on bad roads can at times be very uncomfortable,
due to inadequate shock-absorbers" ?
