The first approach is common to all well written character cell Unix
applications written in about the last decade; you must set the TERM
environment variable to reflect the terminal you are using.  If that
fails, your termcap or terminfo databases are probably broken, so
you should check with your system administrator.  If you believe they
correctly describe the terminal, you'll need to describe exactly what
is wrong - even so, it may not be possible to fix without a licence to
the terminal database sources.
