It eventually timed out on GNU/Linux. But now it's working--here's
a brief Cygwin session demonstrating sub-second response times:
/lmi/mirror/lmi[0]$time svn status --show-updates
? svn.exe.stackdump
Status against revision: 6508
svn status --show-updates 0.09s user 0.37s system 60% cpu 0.766 total
/lmi/mirror/lmi[0]$time svn update
Updating '.':
At revision 6508.
svn update 0.09s user 0.11s system 41% cpu 0.484 total
/lmi/mirror/lmi[0]$
