I did this and now I am seeing more errors. I am using latest version of linphone.
-------------------
checking for LIBGTK... configure: error: Package requirements (gtk+-2.0 >= 2.4.0 gthread-2.0) were not met:

Package renderproto was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `renderproto.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
Package 'renderproto', required by 'Xrender', not found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables LIBGTK_CFLAGS
and LIBGTK_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

Sorry,

I did not remember email my reply to Eric for everyone:

Please, try first "which pkg-config" at command line and then "pkg-config
--version". The latest is 0.23 and available at
 http://pkg-config.freedesktop.org/wiki/ as a source code.

Joerg, try also "export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig"

Best regards,
