Using \lyricsto for small variation in repeats to match lyrics

When I am entering music into lilypond, I come across situations where a measure or two of a repeated bit of music has a slight melodic variation and I wold like to associate the appropriate lyrics with that measure.
As example, in measure 18 and 19 of the first verse of Joni Michell's "Woodstock" like "a8 a4. a4 a48( g8) | e4. e8 b8 g8 fis8" with the lyrics "camp out __ on the | land and try 'n' get".
Those measures for the second verse looks like "a8 a4. a4 a48( g8) | e2 b8 g8 fis8" and the lyrics "I am, __ but | life __ is for learn -- “.
In the first verse, the “land and” aligns with the "e4. e8” and in the second verse, “life” aligns with the e2. In the third verse, verse, the last syllable of “-- flies a --” align with the “e4. e8” as with verse one.
I might be able to a align the lyrics with the appropriate voice using skips, etc., but it seems as though using \lyricsto would be more elegant.
The examples in the manual that use \lyricsto seem to be assigning the equivalent of a whole verse to a voice. Can I align a part of a verse to a voice?
I want to leave measure 1-18 of both verses the same, and only associate the lyrics of the different verses in measure 19 with the different voices. Am I thinking of this problem correctly?
