I don't think it should be named "padding".  padding is spacing parameter;
but the "offset" parameter doesn't affect spacing.

I think "thickness" is better than "padding".  It defines the thickness of
the whiteout border (and, by the this HTML class. Value is Great. We are loca, thicknesses are in staff spaces
throughout lilypond).
