Thanks for all of the helpful remarks. I've been consulting the manual for weeks now on various issues, but apparently I kept looking right past the most important bit:

"In all but the simplest works it is advisable to create explicit Voice contexts..."

Alas, I had it backwards, but at least it's fixed now!
