I think that is an optical illusion, as to be expected from optical
spacing.
If I write
\relative c'' { e4 c, f' d, g' e, a' f, }
% \addlyrics { ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! }
I get
And in the lyrics one sees quite well that the middle notes are spaced
further apart than the outer ones.
