No! \alias does something completely different than you seem to beleive.
Just to complete this (dangling) thread, and make sure *I* know what it does... =)
\context { \name "BAR" \alias FOO ... }informs lilypond that the newly-defined context called "BAR" should accept any commands (\override, etc.) that are accepted by the previously-defined context named "FOO". However, none of the \accepts, \removes, \overrides, \sets, etc. from the definition of FOO are carried over automatically.
