Again, thanks for all the answers, and especially the discussion that
came with them.
It seems that the best solution right now is to use Mats' one-liner
code. The rest of a longer piece can be in another file. That way,
there are no worries about the pagination. Since I would use slyce
anyway for such a situation:
\version etc.
% firstLine.ly
timesig = \time 4/4
music = 5 bars
% theRemainder.ly
timesig = {\time 4/4
blank time sig }
music = remaining bars
\score etc.
\timesig
\music
The only fiddling necessary is to wipe one time signature.
And you could index the first lines? ;-)
JIC you think that you haven't solved a problem, see page
four of http://www.openguitar.com/files/tengtr.pdf. When
I get around to revising it, the new numbering will be a big
improvement and a big help.

Practice pie charts, plans and schedules are good.
Practice logs, diaries and records are good.
When they fail, and they will, do another.
How else can repeated failure be a recipe for success?
The only technical exercises for all guitarists worth a lifetime
of practice: "Dynamic Guitar Technique". Nothing else is close.
