Hello,

i have decided to create a new issue (issue 3979) for this (and split some  
aspects into separate issues):
- it should be easier to review several consecutive patches than one  
big "refactor 'em all" patch
- this issue was really just a lot of noise and not much information (this  
is moslty my fault).
