It's more like"Two variants of \lyricmode additionally set an associated synchronization context. The more convenient \addlyrics immediately follows the Voice context content it should be associated with, creating a Lyrics context of its own. The more versatile \lyricsto requires both specifying the associated Voice context by name and explicitly creating a containing Lyrics context."
That makes it pretty clear which combinations make sense and which don't, something which was rather hand-wavy previously.
