If the criterion is going to be "let's use the most used", then perhaps we all should use windows and forget about that minority GNU thing.
I suppose we could look to see what is available.
Lzip is available everywhere, stable, used by GNU developers, written by one of them (me), copylefted, and probably the best free compressor ever written. What more can you ask? :-)
