Hi Ben,
I think the answer to your question pretty much depends on the
application itself. For example if your network is a bunch of
biological pathways, then keeping it connected is surely important,
but most probably not enough. If your network is a metabolic network,
then maybe some kind of shortest path measure will do. Etc.
