I have a variant of the problem LaTeX and TeX interpreters do not work on both Octave 3.6.2-5 and Matlab. LaTeX interpreter are present and is installed according to synaptic. (Debian wheezy)
Any ideas?

I have both Octave  3.6.1 installed and an earlier version 3.2.4. It works  on the 3.2.4 version but not in the 3.6.1 version. Since I manage to include the symbols in the 3.2.4 version I'm happy.

Both your suggestion and my suggestion worked in 3.2.4 version of Octave.
