Reading a movie with Octave (octave ver. 3.4.3) apparantly has some issues with video codecs - ffmpeg. Based on my experience an suitable avi codec, installing ffmpeg/avformat/avutils and testing the video-1.0.2 and video -1.0.1 package the problem was not solved.
Warning after video-1.0.1 and video-1.0.2 installation in octave is as follows:
