You probably have trouble with the git:// url because you're behind
some needlessly restrictive firewall that blocks the git network port.
Try adding this to your ~/.hgrc
[subpaths]
git://git.sv.gnu.org/gnulib = http://git.savannah.gnu.org/r/gnulib.git
