You need to tell us
octave version
graphics_toolkit you are usin (gnuplot of fltk)
gnuplot version
OS
how did you install octave (self-compiled, binary distribution)

FWIW it works fine on my computer (see attached)
(Fedora 17, x86_64, octave 3.6.2, gnuplot 4.4.4)
