Heaviside function with symbolic variable

Hello
I have a problem with heaviside function. I need use this function with
symbolic variable and it doesnt work.
This is my code ""interval_I = heaviside(t-(t_0))-heaviside(t-(t_0 +
t_1));""
"t" is a symbolic variable and "t_0, t_1" are double.
What can I do?
