I found the problem with building glibc and eglibc.

On Ubuntu 9.10, gcc 4.4.1, gcc inserts 64-bit functions when the machine
is detected as i686-pc-linux-gnu.  Using `export CFLGAS="-match=i686 -O"
prevents using the 64-bit instructions and glibc and eglibc will build.
