Follow-up.  Now it’s working with both single and double quotes.  Clearly, I had something else wrong.  I just wish I knew what it was.  Oh well.

And I found the reference in the manual that there is no difference between single and double quotes for strings.

It should be clear from the subject: that this is from a neophyte.  I have just spent a frustrating hour or so trying to rotate text on a plot using the text function.  I kept using the form “Rotation”, 90. for the property, value pair.  It didn’t work until I tried ‘Rotation’, 90.  Is there a nice document that describes what the difference in single and double quotes is?  I have the manual, but I can’t find it.  Probably there.  But a pointer to the page would be much appreciated.
