The old octave-forge sparse code has bugs.. In Octave 2.9.15, this gives

Compressed Column Sparse (rows = 10, cols = 10, nnz = 1)
(10, 8) -> 1
If you want to use sparse matrices in octave then you really have to
upgrade to an Octave 2.9.x version and preferably 2.9.15. The
octave-forge sparse code has been deleted from the octave-forge tree and
won't ever be changed again...
