The colors in the color map are gray scale colors. So no, the image should not be shown in color. If you load the default image and its color map, you can inspect the values of the color map. If you do this you will see that the columns all have the same value, which corresponds to gray scale colors. I should of course have mentioned this in the previous post -- sorry about that.

Also my grey scale to the right of the photo has no corresponding scale
numbers. I've seen number once but cannot reproduce it.
Yeah, that's a common problem. I think this is a gnuplot bug. I remember being told that it was fixed in cvs, but I haven't tested it so I can't verify that information.
