I presume you mean Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft). Ubuntu already includes
Octave (I'm using it right now on my Edgy system). You may have to
enable some of the additional repositories used by Synaptic Package
Manager to be able to install it, I forget which one. But no porting is
required.
