Escape characters and Matlab compatibility

Hi,

I am trying to run MatlabMPI examples under Octave and right away I ran
into this problem:

octave:1> '\'
error: unterminated string constant
parse error:

>>> '\'
       ^


I see this was addressed some time ago (1997) but it didn't seem to be
resolved so I'm just wondering what the current status is?
