Unfortunately, the most commonly-used vector format right now is Flash, 
which is a closed standard and not supported by most free software 
tools. SVG is apparently now an officially adopted standard for the web, 
but it's not well supported. It's now natively supported by Mozilla, but 
it's not enabled in some Linux distributions (Fedora, for example). 
Apparently Adobe makes a plugin that I assume makes it possible to view 
SVG in Internet Explorer, but I doubt most users will have the 
capability to view SVG by default. So, you could experiment with SVG, 
but you might be better off for now using something like PNG. I'm 
surprised that the web has existed this long without a standard for 
vector graphics that is supported in all browsers.
