del key not working at prompt

Recently my "delete" key stopped working on the Octave prompt.  The 
"backspace" key deletes one character backward, but the "delete" key 
inserts a '~' and makes my computer speaker beep.  The behavior I would 
like, and used to have, is for the delete key to delete one character 
forward.  The delete key works fine at a terminal shell prompt, so it 
doesn't seem to be a problem with my shell.  I'm using Gentoo linux and 
bash.  Any ideas?
