I admit that I'm now totally lost in the Finder of Tiger as I cannot find the directory "/usr/local/bin" whereas it's clearly present as per below and shows that octave (presumably alias for octave-2.1.71) is present . Is it a hidden directory and do I need TinkerTool to see it in the Finder?

Based on very helpful comments from several list members, I have revised the guide a bit (eliminated a few packages, and added a few others).I also included a link to http://hpc.sourceforge.net/ recommended byPaul Kienzle. This site has an OS X 10.4.x installer (binary) for octave, which would presumably eliminate downloading some of the packages. However, I didn't try this method because the latest versions of octave and octave-forge are up and running on my OS X 10.4.1 system, and I don't want to touch them! :-)Would any of you who have installed octave and octave-forge on Mac OSX 10.4.x please look over this revised guide and post any comments you have -- errors, additions, suggestions, and perhaps easier methods of doing this. For example, it would be ideal if there werejust a few OS X installers that we could download rather than havingto download all the separate packages. The above site has an installer for octave, but we still need all the pieces for octave- forge, etc. Let me know if there is a way to simplify all this. Here is the original post about this guide, with the link (for the latest version). Thanks to everyone! -----Here is an absolute beginner's guide to installing octave and octave-forge on Mac OS X 10.4.x. http://dcollett.macosx.com/octaveOSX104.html Thanks to all the members of this list who were very helpful and patient in answering my questions. Because of your help, I was able to get the latest versions of both octave and octave-forge up and running flawlessly. If you have any corrections, additions, or suggestions how this beginner's guide can be improved, please let me know. Thanks again for your help and for this great resource.
