saying that the file is larger than 8GB, but it contains no individual
matrix objects that are larger than about 2GB?

That would be helpful. Every now and then I get an ascii data file >2G
that contains only few variables of interest. It would be nice if I could
fopen it and then fscanf whatever I want. At the moment I cannot even fopen
file >2G in octave, so I had to write a short C routine to parse the file
and save variables I need into a different file etc..., which is not a big
deal really, but somewhat of inconvenience.

Another case is when you load/save an ascii file, size of the file is almost 3
the size of the variable(s).
