getting Octave to find the right libreadline

When I install octave-2.1.50 it complains about
needing libreadline >= 4.2.
I have libreadline-4.3, but installed in my home directory.
The system has an old version,
My personal libraries come first in $LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
what else do I need to do to make the octave install
use my libreadline.
