I'm not qualified to make a suggestion but starting from scratch with a
clean slate is probably a good idea. I just wanted to let you know that for
a novice like me, a binary made installation almost painless. In addition,
I'm really trying to get going on octave installed on a Mac. Thanks to Fink
I was able to do the installation on Mac and suggest that unless you know
how to pre-compile, compile, and link a small source program you cannot
expect to be successful with a big program like Octave. You need a solid
knowledge of Unix and/or C to understand all the steps needed or given in
structions (i.e. Configuration files, make utitlity and more).
