  Afaik, 'keyboard' is the best available tool for debugging.
You just add the command 'keyboard' where you would like a 
stop. You then get a command prompt when the program reaches
that point (this prompt behaves slightly differently from 
the usual command prompt). When you have inspected the situation,
typing 'return' resumes the execution, and typing Control-c inter-
upts it.
