Yes, I mean the data.

I had an Excel-sheet, then saved it with the text (tab-separated)
format, ftp-ed the file to my Unix-machine and finally inserted the
octave header.
Normally this procedure works ok.
Many thanks for your suggestions!As soon as I find out what causes
the problems I will inform you.
