looking for matlab-like engine available for octave

Hi,

I am looking for a matlab-like engine which enables other programs to call 
octave kernel to carry out the calculation or plotting and return the answers 
back to the caller. This will make octave more cooperative with other math 
tools or programs.

Does anyone here have a method or idea to do that?
