make failed

dear GNU team,
 
I'm a biology student and I have to compile the C++ Arachne source code (a software for genome assembly) whit gcc 4.3.0 as suggest by the developers.
when run make I receive this message:
 
make: *** [depend] Killed
Makefile:207: *** MakeDepend failed.  Stop.
 
PS
I send you a copy of the makefile and makedepend.
