If I were to code this, I'd probably handle say, 10 or 20 "base patterns"
containing X*X fighters. Those patterns would live their own life with a
"local" algorithm, and I would put them either randomly or with simple
rules depending on what's arround the pattern itself.
You're right, that's something likely to be fun to code ;)

PS: about the sharing of maps online ("community site") I think Tim
Anderson had some knowledge about web hosting & stuff like that. I
forwarded my question about "what tool could we use" to an internal GNU
discussion list. I'm waiting for replies until I can really have a
definitive opinion on the subject.
