Guidance to contributing

First Congratulations to every one of you who make possible to have this great os.
i enjoy using it!!

So,i would like to help in packaging and i want to know what caracteristics of choosing package to packaged?
should be just a free software?

I am a student and want to learn while contributing in my litle knowlodge.

I currently learn scheme and guile api.i hope i will contribute in the future.
