Are you sure that it regenerates exactly the same files?
What does the command 'kpsewhich feta-braces20.tfm' return?
Try also to run the command 'mktexlsr /var/lib/texmf/' and
then try the kpsewhich and ly2dvi commands again.
If the problems persist, send me a copy of the file
specified by 'kpsewhich texmf.cnf' and I'll take a closer look.
