Yes, the file tree is different in different versions of teTeX
and in different distributions. An alternative to the link is
to set the environment variable MFPLAIN_MP to point to the file.

Han-Wen and Jan: This is only documented in aclocal.m4, why not
add a line in INSTALL.txt, it's getting a FAQ.

The division into packages is different for every Linux distribution
and differ from version to version of a distribution, therefore it's
almost impossible to specify all these dependencies in the docs.

Since Lilypond doesn't install it's own tex header files in
the texmf/ tree, TeX will not find them unless you set the
variable TEXINPUTS. It's all described in INSTALL.txt.
