Try nxml-mode (http://www.thaiopensource.com/nxml-mode/), which has its 
own internal parsing and checking algorithms.  It uses RELAX-NG schemas, 
which are easily generated from DTDs and W3 Schemas using the other 
tools on James Clark's website.
