You need one more line in .emacs (require 'gnuserv) (gnuserv-start) (setq gnuserv-frame (selected-frame)) You are probably not starting a separate instance of emacs. You are starting a new frame within the same instance of emacs (the equivalent of C-x 5 2). The gnuserv-frame variable tells emacs to continue to use the existing frame. Rich
