Perhaps a GNU tbl only extension in the table global option section: columnseparation(n) where n is default 3? Like decimalpoint(c) and linesize(n).

I don't think so, but I can't prove.
This is correct.  It's compiled into the binary.  You can find this in
file src/preproc/tbl/table.cpp:

   const int DEFAULT_COLUMN_SEPARATION = 3;
