It is probably impossible to adapt the existing macro packages to do this. But
that
isn't so much of a problem, since an edition doesn't need the keeps and floats
provided by the macro packages, and you can make do with your own macros for
footnotes and paragraphs. I did this some time ago and posted my mini-macro
package to this list; Werner kindly reposted it with many egregious errors
corrected and some nifty stuff to get the spacing between the notes correct.
