Believe me when I tell you I've seen the weirdest things happen with font metrics (I learned in the school of hard knocks, see CTAN:systems/mac/fonts/oztex for proof :-).
But you are right, it is a problem with AFPL gs, I happen to have a copy of AFPL gs 8 here (native win32 build) that I've dug out my backups and it produces the same skewed result. *But* my copy of GNU gs 7.05---Cygwin/XFree86 build---, the one I use customarily, doesn't have the problem (see attached pdf).
