The way more important part here would be to figure out if they didn't
create a mess like the Raspian people.
So basically: Is this a Debian buster just with some extra packages, or
did they recompile parts of the distribution and create a messy mix of
cpu instructions?


It if is a pure Debian buster - theyn you could just enable buster
backports and install 3.20.

That would make things much more easy...
