Oh, that changes things.  Usually we prefer to reject bad input, not
try to salvage it.  Unless the fix is benign.

Also, as a rare special case, we would certainly need a sample tp
verify the fix.  To be sure it does fix the problem, and only
affects the problem.

Or are you saying gpsd is outputing bad JSON?  In which case we'd
need a snippit that triggers the bad JSON.

Maybe you can hand code some data that triggers the bad thing you see?
