Yes, if you want PPS then you really want the serial. Much more
accurate PPS.
But that detail really makes it even more likely you have a hardware
issue. That would explain the checksum errors and such.
RS-232 is ±12 Volts. Very few GPS output that. Most output 0 Volts to
3 Volts, which many serial inputs can not reliably handle. My guess is
you need a TTL to RS-232 leevel converter, like the MAX2323.
